Vendaikaai Sukke (Bhindi/ Lady's Finger in Coconut Gravy)

This is yet another Mangalorean (Konkan) delicacy. Lady's Finger is my favorite veggie and in any form I love it.
My grand mother in law once made this and I wanted to try this out!!

This is a spicy, sweet and tangy dish. Goes well with Rice and Roti's.


What you need:
  1. Bhindi/ Vendaikaai/ Lady's Finger - 1/4 kg
  2. Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
  3. Curry Leaves - few strands
  4. Salt & Jaggery - to taste
To Grind:
  1. Coconut - 1/4 cup
  2. Tamrind - small size ball 
  3. Dry red chilies - 4 - 6
  4. Dhaniya - 1 1/2 tsp
  5. Urad Dal - 1/4 tsp (roasted in oil)
  6. Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp

How to go about it:
  1. Heat oil in a pan, roast urad dal, dhaniya and dry red chilies until they are fragrant and let it cool. now is a mixer add coconut, tamarind and turmeric powder and the roasted spices and add little water and grind to a very fine paste.
  2. Now, heat oil in a pan, splutter the mustard seeds, curry leaves and add the chopped ladies finger and fry.
  3. Add salt and jaggery and fry. 
  4. Now add the ground paste and fry for a few more minutes, until everything combines together. 
  5. Serve hot with rice or roti.
